The basic concept of divination is asking a question and then drawing an answer from a set of possible responses. As I mentioned in my article "Scientific Research on Divination," the author of the 1994 book *Tao of Chaos* used statistics to prove that I Ching divination is not mere fabrication or coincidence. So why is divination accurate? A simple and convincing explanation is that your subconscious (or, if you believe, a "divine being," "higher self," or "guardian angel") wants to give you the answer to your question. Your subconscious can utilize all the records of your surroundings from your five senses. For example, when you walk from the subway station to the platform, over a hundred people may pass by you in just two minutes, some of whom you recognize, though you wouldn't notice. But these visual records remain in your subconscious. You don't know it, because knowing is useless. Similarly, from the attitudes of your colleagues, you should be able to deduce what's happening in the company. Your rational mind doesn't notice, but your subconscious knows. Your subconscious knows a hundred times more than you do, and it can even control the outcome of the divination, like a con artist. (I tried to replicate the experiment described in Tao of Chaos, and found that after four hundred divinations, I could control which hexagrams came up.) So, through divination, you're essentially asking someone extremely knowledgeable and intelligent to answer your questions. But even if your subconscious knows a hundred times more than you, it's still limited. Therefore, your predictions about social issues won't be very accurate. Predicting future events has a "validity period" of three months. Beyond that, based on the information we currently have, we can't deduce anything further.
