The sixty-four hexagrams themselves are merely sixty-four patterns depicting the dynamic relationships of the universe, without any pre-set auspicious or inauspicious labels. The manifestation of their auspicious or inauspicious tendencies, and the extraction of analogies from all things, depend entirely on the specific spatiotemporal energy field constructed by the four parameters of year, month, day, and hour embedded at the time of divination. The four parameters are like the director of the weather, and the hexagrams are like the script on stage; only when the two combine do they form the tragedy and comedy of specific life experiences. Therefore, the "Appended Remarks" says, "Those who adapt are those who follow the times." Those who study the I Ching should understand the great meaning of this "time," not clinging to rigid hexagrams, but observing dynamic divination, examining the static hexagram symbols with a dynamic spatiotemporal perspective, in order to glimpse the true essence of the I Ching: "Flowing through the six voids, adapting only to change."
